Narcissus Topolino

Narcissus Topolino

A heritage miniature daffodil with creamy white petals and a soft yellow trumpet. Ideal for rockeries, edging, and naturalising in grass or under trees.

Description

Narcissus Topolino is a charming heirloom-style daffodil, prized for its vintage tones and elegant simplicity. A dwarf trumpet type reaching just 20–25 cm tall, it produces neat, upward-facing blooms with ivory-white petals that gently sweep back from a soft primrose-yellow trumpet. Its refined shape and muted palette make it especially valuable in early spring schemes where restraint, contrast, and naturalistic tone are preferred over saturated colour blocks. Flowering in March, it offers a subtle, graceful presence among bolder cultivars and acts as a season-extending foreground layer in mixed plantings.

Topolino thrives in full sun or light dappled shade and is exceptionally resilient in Irish conditions, tolerating damp winters, frost pockets, and light wind exposure. It excels in sandy or loamy soils but adapts well to heavier ground when given drainage — making it a flexible option for rural field margins, community orchards, heritage borders, and informal parkland verges. It’s also well-suited to gravel beds, rockeries, old stone planters, and wildflower corners where a low-growing daffodil with quiet distinction is needed.

Though it is unscented, its open, trumpet-shaped blooms provide early foraging opportunities for short-tongued bees, hoverflies, and emerging pollinators. Its modest size and restrained colouring make it ideal for combination with Crocus Ard Schenk, Scilla siberica, or Anemone blanda White Splendour, particularly in white or pastel-themed planting schemes. It also integrates beautifully with spring ephemerals and low alpine bulbs in naturalistic styles.

Topolino is a reliable performer for school gardens, courtyard bulb trails, and coastal biodiversity corridors, where early impact, ease of maintenance, and historical character are valued. A timeless cultivar that balances heritage charm with ecological utility — understated yet incredibly effective across formal and informal Irish landscapes.
