Description
Mary Evelyn is a contrast dahlia that reads clearly at distance and rewards close viewing. Its collarette form keeps the centre open for pollinators, while the colour combination gives drama: rich wine red outer petals, a lighter collar, and a warm yellow centre. It is a strong choice for schemes that need depth without relying on oversized, heavy blooms. It is particularly effective near pale paving, gravel or stone where the dark tones look even richer. It suits sunny borders and a cutting patch, delivering stems that immediately add contrast to bouquets. Build a deep red and gold scheme with Gladiolus Purple Art or Velvet Raspberry, Crocosmia Lucifer and Begonia red types. Add a clean break with Zantedeschia aethiopica or white Tigridia to keep the palette sharp. Plant after frost risk in full sun and free draining soil improved with compost. Feed from bud stage, deadhead regularly, and lift tubers after the first frosts.
