Description

Iris ensata ‘Blueberry Pie’ dinner plate flower has large blooms, up to 15cm, across on stiff stems and grows to 60cm . This hardy perennial is deep blue to vibrant purple in colour, and shows its colours from June to July. This Iris grows well in damp areas of the garden or by a pond. The plant has thick rhizomes. These thick roots should be planted shallowly and almost horizontally as soon as possible after receipt. Japanese Iris plants thrive in moist, acid or neutral soil in a sunny or semi-shaded position. These moisture loving Iris require a rich, fertile soil which has had plenty of well rotted organic matter added into the soil prior to planting. Avoid submerging iris ensata in ponds and streams as this may cause them to rot. Instead, plant them in moist ground at the water’s edge, or in damp borders and bog gardens with their roots in the shade and their heads in the sun.
